BEHN + BATES at Anuga FoodTec 2012
Better Product Protection Due to New Optimized Bag Materials
Optimum product protection, longer product shelf life and better product storage are requirements tightly connected with modern packaging solutions by food experts. At Anuga FoodTec 2012 in Cologne, Germany from March 27 to the 30, the German packaging machine specialist BEHN + BATES will showcase how bag packaging could look like based on new improved technologies and better bag materials.
BEHN + BATES is the only bag packaging machine manufacturer with specialization exclusively in the food industry. Therefore, product protection and shelf life are a high priority at BEHN + BATES. The company has succeeded in filling hygroscopic or moisture-sensitive powder (e.g. dextrose) into PE or PP film bags of 10 to 50 kg in a clean, rapid and efficient way. The bag type – valve or open-mouth bags – plays a secondary role: Good filling results are reached for tight PP valve bags as well as FFS tubular film bags when using the right filling systems, just as the ROTOSEAL and ADAMS technologies. This was impossible some years ago because of the high dust levels of powders. Due to the clean product processing, the tight bag material and the hermetically tight bag seal, the end user now gets optimum product display as well as better product protection from outside influences. The product shelf life is longer. The product storage is easier.
Technology to be Seen, Touched and Experienced.
BEHN + BATES will present filling technologies that can be seen, touched and experienced at Anuga FoodTec 2012. The Wesphalian machine building company will exhibit a classic valve bag packer in its newest design. It will be equipped with an ultrasound sealing station for a hermetical tight and clean valve seal. In addition, the model of a special powder filling spout, the so-called HAP spout, will impressively show how cleanly and economically open-mouth or FFS bags can be handled.

Faster Than Fast - High Capacity Filling Rates and Minimum Space Requirements Were The Goals to Meet
The latest developed TOPLINE 2000 – a machine out of the TOPLINE SERIES – will be showcased by HAVER FILLING SYSTEMS, INC. in cooperation with its affiliated company BEHN + BATES America at this year’s Pack Expo in Las Vegas from September 26 – 28, 2011.
The TOPLINE 2000 is a sophisticated machine design for the high-speed filling of granular products, e. g. pet food, rice, seed, salt, fertilizer, plastic pallets and more. The machine is designed to fill these and other bulk products into open-mouth bags made of paper, PE or woven PP.
Benefits, such as minimum space requirements and hourly output rates of up to 1,800 bags are remarkable.
Needing just 1 filling spout and 2 net weighers sets the TOPLINE 2000 apart from conventional bag packing systems, which usually require 2 filling spouts and 3 - 4 net weighers. Also the integration of a vertical bag magazine is another feature which leads to additional space savings. While conventional systems use horizontal bag magazines of which the installation length depends on the requested storage and machine capacity. The advantage for the TOPLINE 2000’s vertical bag magazine is obvious: Less Space – Greater Cost Savings.
In addition, the machine is equipped with 2 operator displays and is setup for e-commerce. One of the displays is mounted on a telescopic arm and allows easy spare parts ordering via HMI.
Companies are undertaking major initiatives by improving their production facilities to keep them environmentally friendly. Energy consumption must be reduced and bag materials need to be minimized. The new TOPLINE 2000 uses servo-driven motors that are automatically switched on and off depending on the chosen bagging process. Furthermore, it can handle the smallest bag overlaps and new bags made of thinner materials which are also extremely tear-resistant.
The TOPLINE 2000 is the most economical solution for filling granulated products, especially pet food. The U.S. market is one of the most active and competitive markets for pet food. The growth in the pet food industry has primarily been driven by the humanization of pets. This has led to a variety of opportunities for suppliers, as market requirements for pet food broadens and therefore the importance of accurate processing and hygienic packaging is increasing.
PRESS RELEASE
BEHN + BATES presents new packer for open-mouth flat and gusseted bags
The filling machine specialist BEHN + BATES located in Münster/Germany expands its activities in the field of open-mouth bag packaging. In the last years the company focused on the development of the fully automatic packing systems TOPLINE and ORBIS for high packing outputs and large food packing companies. Now, the company is targeting food producers not needing fully automatic systems with automatic bag application and discharge, but insisting on the precise filling of their products. Based on the proven modules of its fully automatic machines BEHN + BATES has developed the packing system BO which is a cost-effective, simple-to-operate, manual filling station for open-mouth flat and gusseted bags made of paper, PE, PP or material combinations.
Besides the standard features, such as clean, weight-accurate and gentle product filling, the new machine can be easily upgraded due to the expandable design of the basic filling module that is equipped for the manual bag application and full bag discharge in a first stage. The buyer does thus not only profit from the tailor-suited expansion of his capacities, but also from the optimum budgeting thanks to the possible successive extension in different planning periods becoming more and more important in view of the present situation in the global economy.
The BO packing system fills bag weights from 10 to 50 kg according to either the gross or the net filling principle what depends on the buyer’s individual needs. High emphasis is placed on a product-adapted packaging process guaranteed by the proven dust-tight hexagonal filling spout. It holds the bag tight on all sides thus preventing dust leakage. At the same time, highest weight accuracies are reached due to the MEC weighing electronics developed in-house especially for filling needs. The product is dosed into the filling spout according to need either by a screw, impeller or gravimetrically.
The filled bags are taken off the filling spout and transferred to the closing station manually. The buyer decides how he closes the bags – either by sewing, folding, welding and/or hot-melt activating. In the food industry the combination of welding and hot-melt activating has proven its worth, as the bags are closed especially tight then. Any humidity, foreign bodies, vermin, etc. cannot get into the packed product. When using the right bag material the buyer may even reach higher storage times due to the tight closure in combination with an internal PE film welding.
PRESS RELEASE - ORBIS
Innovative and dynamic on the occasion of the 75th anniversary
BEHN + BATES presents new high-performance packaging systems: ORBIS for open-mouth bags and impeller packer with integrated metal detector for valve bags.
In 2008 the company BEHN + BATES located in Münster/Germany celebrates its 75th anniversary and presents itself more innovative than ever. At the interpack 2008 the German packaging specialist will show its new filling system ORBIS for open-mouth bags that has been specially developed for the filling of powdery products at hourly rates of more than 500 bags with filling weights of 25 kg. In addition, the traditional company will present its well proven impeller packer in optimised version with integrated metal detector.
The demand of the international food industry for hygienic filling of powdery products into open-mouth bags at rates of more than 500 bags per hour has increased, as the valve bag has not been convincing for all products. The packaging machine manufacturers are confronted with the challenge that powdery products, just as flour, baking ingredients, starch, yeast, etc. cannot be filled as easily and efficiently as granules. Everybody knows: Powders are dusty. Optimum filling results can only be attained with the right filling system. The relation between low-air filling, dust-tight filling spout and efficient product de-aeration are of utmost importance, but influence the machine output.
BEHN + BATES accepts this challenge and presents its new open-mouth bag filling system ORBIS at the interpack 2008 in Düsseldorf/Germany from
2007-04-24 until 2007-04-30.
The new packaging system ORBIS made by BEHN + BATES guarantees both the efficient hygienic filling of powdery products as well as high machine outputs of up to 600 bags per hour. It can handle all of the common bag types, just as gusseted and flat bags made of paper, PE or combinations thereof. It is equipped with 3, 4 or 6 filling spouts.
The machine shown at the interpack 2008 is equipped with 4 filling spouts that work independently from each other thus making it possible to carry out the individual filling steps (bag application, coarse-flow filling, fine-flow filling and bag discharge) simultaneously. This results in shorter cycles and higher machine outputs. The individual filling steps are optimally synchronized.
The empty bags are separated at their bottom and then guided through the modern empty bag magazine by the optimized high-speed singling station. Thus, a controlled bag opening and a secure bag placing by a servo-driven applicator arm to the filling spout is guaranteed. The product is filled according to the gross system, i. e. the bags are weighed during the filling process. Height-adjustable bottom vibrators provided in encapsulated design, due to the severe hygienic prescriptions in the food industry, assure that the bags are optimally compacted. The results are stable bags that can be easily stacked and a perfect pallet shape being of utmost importance for the product marketing.
After the filling the bag is taken off the filling spout and transferred to the discharge unit. The filled bags are closed either by folding, sewing, sealing, gluing, hot-melt activation or combinations thereof. The chosen type of closing systems depends on the individual customer requests. In the food industry the combination of sealing and hot-melt activation has proven its worth as the bags are especially tight then. Humidity, foreign bodies, bugs or similar cannot penetrate the product. Even longer storage times are possible due to the tight closure in combination with an internal PE welding, provided that the right bag material has been chosen.
The severe hygienic standards in the food industry were one of the main criteria for the design of the new BEHN + BATES packaging system ORBIS: The filling system is suspended from the top. It is thus easily accessible for cleaning purposes underneath the filling spouts. In addition, the machine bottom is completely closed and the energy cables are laid outside the dust area. The access doors made of security glass are flush with the machine frame. Possible dust deposit areas are reduced to a minimum.
With the ORBIS system BEHN + BATES is perfectly prepared for the future. Again and again new convincing packaging designs for the food industry arise from the combination of tradition and innovation.
